In an article written for the 2020 Sustainable Packaging Campaign, Common Seas’ Managing Director Jo Royle outlines why coronavirus has been “a disaster for the war on single-use plastic”.
The article explains that vital progress in both raising awareness of ocean plastic pollution and acting on the problem has been lost, with the pandemic having contributed to a “wholesale regression” to single-use plastic.
Across all sectors of the global economy, our Managing Director notes reusables have been side-lined in efforts to combat the virus – despite the fact that, according to research, safe and sustainable practices exist.
Royle draws attention to the practical guidebook Common Seas has produced for hospitality businesses to help them continue to reduce single-use plastics, while keeping staff and customers safe during the pandemic – both in the context of the Greek response to COVID-19, and for the global sector at large.
Published in time for World Cleanup Day 2020 by Business & Industry, the article forms part of a series of insights from thought leaders on sustainability, including the World Economic Forum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
