On 27th June, Common Seas is jointly running an event to discuss the new Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon. We’re co-hosting the event with Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), and partnering with the Commonwealth Blue Charter, Rwanda, Peru, the European Commission and the Center for International Environmental Law. What is the UN Ocean Conference?
The UN Ocean Conference will host discussions and promote science-based actions to address the threats facing our ocean, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 14 - ‘Life Below Water’.
We’re looking forward to a week of rich and insightful discussions with knowledgeable and committed colleagues from around the world, focused on how to save our ocean and protect our future.
What event are we co-hosting at the conference?
The UN is currently negotiating a Global Treaty on plastic pollution. We believe this treaty could be a turning point in the fight against plastic in our ocean.
Together with EIA, we organised this event at the UN Ocean Conference to discuss which ingredients will ensure this treaty fulfills its potential. And we’re inviting government, civil society, academia and business to contribute.
Why is this so important?
Common Seas believes the treaty must do two things to succeed. First, it must require member countries to set national baselines, announce targets and report on progress. And second, it must be equitable and work for all nations, particularly low-capacity countries and Small Island Developing States.
Common Seas is committed to supporting this equitable approach through Plastic Drawdown, a peer-reviewed tool that helps countries set baselines, design policy and take action to reduce plastic pollution.
We are looking for partnerships to help us provide Plastic Drawdown to the 10 low-capacity countries that need it most.
Who should attend?
We are looking to speak to country governments, funding bodies and in-country NGOs who might be interested in partnering with us to make this happen.
