Το Clean Blue Paros θα στηρίξει αυτό το Ελληνικό νησί ώστε να γίνει το πρώτο νησί της Μεσογείου χωρίς πλαστικά απορρίμματα και παγκόσμιος πρωτοπόρος στη μάχη ενάντια στα πλαστικά στις θάλασσές μας.
Η πρωτοβουλία μας Clean Blue Alliance στηρίζει νησιά να επιταχύνουν λύσεις για την εξάλειψη των πλαστικών που διαρρέουν σε θάλασσες και ωκεανούς. Η πρώτη της πρωτοβουλία για νησιά, το ‘Clean Blue Paros’, είναι μια δυναμική συνεργασία μεταξύ Δήμου Πάρου, Cyclades Preservation Fund - CPF), WATT, WWF ΕΛΛΑΣ και πρωτοπόρων τοπικών επιχειρήσεων της Πάρου.
Our on-the-ground team built innovative partnerships with local government, business and the community. Together, they designed and tested the following solutions to the plastic problem.
- Working with over 100 hospitality businesses to help them measure and reduce or eliminate single-use plastics.
- Conducting community-led beach litter audits to understand the plastics entering Paros’ beaches and sea.
- Installing gamified ashtrays to stop the littering of cigarette butts on Paros.
- Improving the placement of bins across the island to decrease landfill and increase recycling.
- Launching Community Dishes – a reuse solution – to remove single-use plastics from island festivals.
- Incentivising the use of tap water by testing its quality, installing water filters in schools, and raising awareness through water bills and a comms campaign, including a ‘Drink Tap’ video shown on local ferries.
- Launching an education programme to inspire the next generation of sea champions.

We used what we’d learned on Paros to develop larger-scale solutions that could tackle plastic pollution around the world.
Business partnerships – Our work with local businesses helped us build PlasTICK - an online reporting tool and coach that supports hospitality businesses reduce plastic use.
Education – Having got our educational resources into schools on Paros, we took them to the Greek Government – which then rolled them out across the rest of the country. Tools and resources – We created a toolkit so other islands could follow in Paros’ footsteps. The Clean Blue Promise is now being used on Antiparos, Skiathos and Syros.
Common Seas developed models that show 5 key strategies could reduce plastic pollution in Grenada by 79% over the next decade.
Strategy 1: Tackle plastic water bottles:
- Enhancing Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) to include plastic beverage bottles
- Extending the Environment Levy (tax) to include pre-forms, plastic shapes that are turned into bottles in Grenada
- Providing water refill points
- Phased ban on single use plastic bottles
Strategy 2: Tackle single use plastics and establish circular delivery models (e.g. reuse and refill):
- Tax single use food packaging, including biodegradables to discourage their use
- Tax single use plastic bags not covered in the ban to discourage their use
- Introduce a refill system for food takeaway containers
- Promote reusable diapers and period products
- Household separation of recyclable plastics
Strategy 4: Improve on-the-go waste collection and tackle littering:
- Increase enforcement against littering and fly-tipping to encourage behaviour change
- Implement an enhanced waste collection and recycling scheme to tackle littering
Strategy 5: Improve solid waste management & wastewater systems:
- Improve household waste collections
- Enhance standards for waste transportation, storage and handling
- Improved screening of items flushed into wastewater systems
The report has been developed in consultation with our partners in the Grenadian government and a wider expert group of stakeholders to ensure that the analysis is fully informed by the knowledge and expertise of those organisations and people most closely involved in the use and disposal of plastics in Grenada.
